In August of this year our members received Three spectacular bubblies. The first offering is from small grower producer by the name of Chartogne-Taillet, located in the village
of Merfy in the Montagne de Reims. The house is owned and operated by Patrick and Elisabeth Chartogne
with the help of their very talented son Alexander. This young man studied at the famed Selosse,
where he learned and developed a passion for biodynamics. Demonstrated in their conversion of vineyards
to biodynamic farming and reduction of malolactic fermentation than in the past. This has resulted
in wines that are more mineral-driven and less overt than in the past. Their wines are simply beautiful
and are all highly recommended. Terroir holds great significance with this house, exemplifying of just how
wonderful wines can be simply because of how talented and conscientious the house is. Chartogne-Taillet
is small producing only 6,700 cases per year. The family owns 12 hectares of vines, for which they
plant 50% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier. The Chartogne Taillet Blanc de Blancs
is shiny straw color with medium bead and steady streamers. There is peach and toast on the nose. Medium
body on the palate, rich and creamy flavors, lots of apples with bright citrus fruit and a touch of steel in the
finish. Suggested price for this illegant bottle is $75.00
The second bottle that we have chosen for you is the The Monthuys Pere et Fils Brut Reserve Champagne
the grapes are harvested from the magnificent Charly-Sur-Marne area and the region’s riverbanks. The
cuvee is a blend of 30 % Chardonnay, 60 % Meunier, and 10 % Pinot Noir. The wine is bright gold in color
with almond and citrus on the nose. The palate shows nice citrus notes with a pretty mousse. The finish is
toasty and creamy. This bottle lists for $45.00.
The third selection is from the house of Laurent Perrier. The wine is composed of roughly equal parts
of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, exclusively from the very best crus or villages. Historically, most of these crus
have formed the basis of Laurent-Perrier’s Champagnes. The most prestigious among them are: Mesnil-sur-
Oger, Oger, Avize, Cramant, Chouilly, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Tours-sur-Marne and Louvois. Only the cuvée (the
best juice) is used from these growths. The wine is bottle-aged for a minimum of seven years.
The Laurent-Perrier 1999 Vintage Brut Champagne is sumptuous and delicate, offering peach, beeswax and ginger
notes. Firmly structured, with a chalklike sensation underneath that emerges on the finish. Drink now through
2015.” Score: 90 Points, Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar:
